Summary

Tucson VA HCS is hiring an Advanced Practice Dietitian with Board Certification as a Nutrition Oncology Specialist (CSO) or Certified Nutrition Support Clinician (CNSC) for the Oncology clinic. The role involves comprehensive nutrition assessments via the Nutrition Care Process (NCP) and delivering high-quality care within an expanded scope. ALP Dietitians are clinical nutrition experts who apply their knowledge and research to develop, implement, and evaluate organizational initiatives.



Duties

Include but are not limited to:

Advanced Level Practice Dietitians are the subject matter experts in advanced clinical nutrition and uses knowledge, expertise, principles, and/or current research to lead dietitians and nutrition specialty care teams to plan, implement, and evaluate organizational initiatives. Typical duties include but are not limited to:
  • Leads dietitians and multidisciplinary specialty teams in developing nutrition-related services, policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Provides comprehensive medical nutritional care utilizing the Nutrition Care Process (NCP) within specialty programs and various patient care settings.
  • Develops individualized nutrition interventions based on the latest research, evidence-based guidelines, and best practices.
  • Delivers nutrition education to individuals, groups, peers, licensed practitioners, medical students, interns, and residents as appropriate.
  • Offers consultative services regarding advanced therapies, policies, procedures, and research to ensure the delivery of high-quality nutritional care.
  • Develops, monitors, and manages practice-specific benchmarks aligned with standards of care and national initiatives.
  • Applies current knowledge, expertise, principles, and research to plan, implement, and evaluate organizational initiatives.
  • Leads the implementation of new nutrition programs or changes in practice to achieve strategic objectives.
  • Establishes goals, measures outcomes, and reports progress to medical center committees, healthcare teams, and professional groups.
  • Leads staff, develops and validates competencies, and designs training activities.

Work Schedule: Full Time, Monday - Friday, 7:30AM to 4:00PM

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Registration: All applicants must hold the RDN credential from the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) the credentialing agency of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Note: Applicants who hold the RDN credential have met the education requirement (e.g. bachelor's degree or higher) of CDR, as such this occupation is considered professional and scientific with a positive education requirement and the procedures in Part I, Chapter 4 of this Handbook will be followed when applying Veteran's preference.
Current VHA Dietitians that qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision may not be promoted to a higher grade if they do not meet the current RDN/RD requirements.

Grade Determinations: Dietitian (Advanced Level Practice), GS-12.
  • Experience. One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-11).
  • Certification. Must hold an advanced practice certification from a nationally recognized certifying body such as the Commission on Dietetic Registration, the Association of Diabetes Care and Education Specialists or the National Board of Nutrition Certification. The certification must be directly related to the assignment being filled. For example, where the assignment requires diabetes management, a Board Certified-Advanced Diabetes Management or Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialists certification is qualifying. Commonly held certifications include Board Certified Specialist in Renal Nutrition; Board Certified Specialist in Gerontological Nutrition; Registered Dietitian Nutritionist-Advanced Practitioner; Certified Nutrition Support Clinician.
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities. In addition to the experience and certification above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
    1. Skill in leading a team in the implementation of nutrition-related activities.
    2. Skill in utilizing evidence- based practice guidelines to establish or modify goals and improve patient outcomes.
    3. Ability to communicate in writing to develop policies and standard operating procedures.
    4. Ability to serve as a nutrition expert, providing technical guidance, direction and staff development.
    5. Ability to lead research or performance improvement studies.
    6. Ability to present complex nutrition information to a large group of health care providers to persuade and influence provision of care.

Preferred Experience: Must be a current Board Certified Specialist in Oncology Nutrition (CSO) or a Certified Nutrition Support Clinician (CNSC).
