This Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) position is located within the Nursing, Operations section at VA Central Western Massachusetts Healthcare System in Leeds, MA.
The LPN assists the registered nurse with the care of patients with acute and rapidly changing physical and/or emotional needs which are met by the application of specialized technical skills and an understanding of basic scientific principles of nursing care.
Duties Included but are not limited to:
- Plan and prioritize daily work with minimal supervision. Incumbent is subjected to interruptions and distractions. Incumbent must be capable of exercising sound judgment in assigning a priority order for additional requests.
- The incumbent must be flexible enough to adjust work plans to include the demands received in the form of an administrative problem to which they usually independently applies a solution. The employee decides what needs to be done by choosing from various options that require recognition of and differences among a few easily recognizable alternatives.
- The incumbent performs a variety of support duties that facilitates the work of physicians, physician assistants, nurses, nursing assistants and other members of the medical facility who provide Veteran care.
- The incumbent has the ability to work independently including setting priorities and coordinating work.
- Incumbent must be capable of exercising sound judgment in assigning a priority order to those requests which best serves the interest of the Veteran and the unit.
- The incumbent must be flexible enough to adjust work plans to include the demands received in the form of an administrative problem to which they usually independently applies a solution. The employee decides what needs to be done by choosing from various options that require recognition of and differences among a few easily recognizable alternatives.
- Processes Veterans for admissions, transfer, or discharge following established written nursing program guidelines.
- Work consists of personal nursing care duties, treatments, diagnostic support, recording, Veteran teaching and rehabilitation. Recurring duties are carried out independently and employee is able to vary basic procedures to meet the individual needs and capabilities of the Veteran.
- Work consists of several related processes such as compiling, recording, reviewing, selecting and interpreting medical data and information incidental to a variety of Veteran care and treatment activities.
- Applies knowledge of human behavior, motivations and reactions to situations in the provision of nursing care for an aging population.
- Provides nursing care by observing, identifying and responding to the physical, emotional, and social needs of specific Veterans. These factors are considered in modifying nursing care plans to promote the well-being of the Veteran.
Work Schedule: 3:30pm to 12:00am with rotating days off, holidays and weekend

Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases. When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade).
Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year)
Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior [work experience] or military service experience.
Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.
Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66
