The Southern Arizona VA Health Care System (SAVACHS) is seeking to add a full-time daytime hospitalist to our Hospitalist Division. The physician will participate as the attending physician. We have both teaching and non-teaching teams in the daytime; the nocturnist team is a teaching team. On teaching teams, the attending is responsible for the instruction of residents, interns, and possibly medical students. The candidate should be proficient in core Internal Medicine invasive procedures; refresher training is available in our excellent simulation laboratory. Commitment to excellence in patient care and an interest in teaching are essential. A record of contribution to the scientific literature is preferred, as is a willingness to participate in clinical trials. Experience with resident supervision and instruction is appreciated, but new Internal Medicine graduates are also welcome; our University affiliate offers classes on effective teaching.
The Tucson VA is a tertiary care facility providing a full range of clinical services including complex coronary angioplasty, electrophysiology, structural heart procedures, cardiac surgery, Mohs surgery, neurosurgery, navigational bronchoscopy and 24/7 STEMI services. SAVAHCS has been a flagship quality provider within the VA and was a 2012 winner of the prestigious Robert W. Carey Performance Excellence Award. In the recently released CMS hospital ratings, we are a five-star facility. We are in a growth area for the VA; consequently, the VA is open to major capital investment in our facility. We have a hybrid OR and are in the construction phase for expansions of Primary Care and Emergency Medicine.
SAVAHCS is the principal teaching affiliate of the University of Arizona Colleges of Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmacy. Candidates must be eligible for a faculty appointment with the University of Arizona commensurate with clinical experience and academic achievement to facilitate teaching of medical students and residents.
The incumbent is expected to actively participate in quality improvement activities and comply with rules and regulations of the agency, facility and department. The incumbent will also support a satisfactory process for supervision and training of residents and medical students rotating through the Hospitalist Division. Like all division members, the candidate must maintain American Heart Association BLS and ACLS certification. A commitment to compliance with VA and SAVAHCS regulatory requirements is expected. Duties include but are not limited to the following:

- Preference will be given to candidates who are board eligible/board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM).
- The candidate must also be American Heart Association BLS and ACLS certified.

- The candidate is also expected to acquire our facility certification in airway management after completing local on-line, simulation laboratory, and hands-on training.
