Summary

The primary purpose of this position is to plan, direct, and supervise all clinical and administrative functions of the Dietary and Nutrition Department.

Duties

  • Plan, organize, and direct the operations of the Dietary and Nutrition Department to meet patient care needs and organizational goals.
  • Assign work to approximately 20 subordinate employees based on priorities and individual capabilities.
  • Document nutritional assessments, patient education, discharge plans, and referral information in the patient's medical record.
  • Serve as a clinical resource to medical and allied health staff on dietetic management and emerging dietary treatment approaches.
  • Implement change in operations, methods, and procedures to resolve operational problems and improve service delivery.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

  • Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in the fields of dietetics, food, nutrition, food service management, institution management, or related science. The educational program must have been accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND), or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. For dietitian positions, the curriculum must have been in accordance with the qualifying requirements established by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) (formerly American Dietetic Association) (ADA) prior to January 1, 2012) in effect at the time of graduation.
  • Completion of a coordinated undergraduate program, internship, or other clinical component approved by AND (formerly ADA) for dietitians or nutritionists.
  • Professional registration as a Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN).
NOTE: Employees currently assigned to positions in this occupational series as of September 2017 will be considered to have met the basic requirements for the position occupied.

In addition to the Individual Occupational Requirements (IOR), you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks:
  • Provide clinical dietic services to inpatient, outpatient, and emergency department patients of all ages across a broad range of disease conditions.
  • Conduct nutritional assessments and monitor patient progress to determine the need for diet modifications.
  • Compile dietetic data and prepare records and reports on workload, output, and scheduling for management, accreditation review, and budgetary purposes.
  • Establish program priorities and adjust work schedules and staffing allocations in response to operational demands and patient care requirements.

Time In Grade
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).

This is a designated position covered by Public Law 101-630, requiring contact or control over Indian children. Due to this requirement, the agency must ensure that persons hired for these positions have not been found guilty of or pleaded nolo contendere or guilty to certain crimes.

A one-year supervisory/managerial probationary period may be required upon selection/placement.

The selected individual is required to obtain and maintain medical staff clinical privileges, including any licensure requirements. If privileges are not obtained or maintained during employment, the employee will be subject to adverse actions, up to and including removal from Federal service.

Background Investigation Requirement:

This position requires the successful completion of a federal background investigation as a condition of employment.

A background investigation is a standard process used by the Federal Government to verify an individual's identity, employment history, education, and other relevant information to determine suitability for Federal service.

Upon receipt of instructions, applicants must complete all required background investigation forms within five (5) calendar days of issuance. Timely completion is critical to avoid delays in processing or a determination of unsuitability.
