Pathologists are licensed physicians who are trained in pathology to make medical diagnoses that are based upon macroscopic, cellular (microscopic), molecular or laboratory examination of human tissue, body fluids or other samples from the human body. Pathologists direct clinical and anatomic pathology laboratory services; perform biopsies; evaluate surgical, cytology, and autopsy specimens; interpret clinical laboratory tests; and serve as pathology consultants to other physicians. By virtue of their extensive medical education, clinical training, and specialty certification in the medical discipline of pathology, pathologists are the physicians uniquely best qualified to perform these services. Pathologists must be board certified in Anatomic Pathology and/or Clinical Pathology by the American Board of Pathology. Staff pathologists are supervised by the local Chief/Associate Chief of Pathology.
Specific duties of pathologists may also include, but will not be limited to the following:
- Contributes to the operation of effective and safe laboratories that are in compliance with standards established by the College of American Pathologists (CAP), The Joint Commission (TJC), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB), and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
- Ensures accurate anatomic pathology services (surgical pathology, cytology, and autopsy), with TATs that meet the reasonable and possible expectations of the medical staff and accrediting agencies when adequately supported with necessary resources from facility administration and human resource management services. TAT is monitored monthly and reported in the QA Committee minutes.
- Participates in the Laboratory Quality Improvement (QI) Plan, addressing appropriate and practical QI needs as indicated by accreditation, internal, and external sources.
