Summary

The Central Texas VA Health Care System is currently recruiting for a Fee Basis Podiatrist for Surgical Service to utilize for Saturday clinic rotations.

This is an intermittent Fee Basis appointment.

Duties

The Central Texas VA Health Care System is seeking applications for a Fee Basis Podiatrist position at the Olin E. Teague Veterans' Center VA hospital in Temple, TX. Twelve to Sixteen patients per day to be scheduled. Includes clinic procedures such as ulcer debridement, ingrown toenails, toenail debridement, callus debridement, taping/strapping/splinting/casting. No resident involvement.

1 to 5 patients seen - $475
6 to 8 patients seen - $900
9 to 11 patients seen - $1425
12 to 16 patients seen - $1900

Administrative Duties
Writes Medical Orders and prescriptions for controlled and non-controlled substances, as necessary, for the care of the patient in accordance with Federal and State law. Documents care provided in the Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS) in accordance with Central Texas Veterans Health Care System requirements.
  • Documents the detailed, targeted, initial history and physical examination required for evaluation in the electronic tool(s) required by VA.
  • Obtains consent and documents procedures performed for which the Podiatrist is responsible.
  • Provides education and counseling of patients and families in preventive care, medical conditions, and the use of prescribed treatments and drugs.
  • Review and revise policies and scope of practice/standards of operation to meet the needs of the National VA and Central Texas Veterans Health Care System mandates.
  • Review and guide protocols in chronic patient managements including coordinating efforts with prosthetics department to meet patients' needs and maintain fiscal responsibility.

Clinical Duties:
Responds to and completes consults received for the evaluation of Podiatry including:
  • Performs a comprehensive, detailed, targeted, initial history and physical examination in compliance with national guidelines.
  • Orders diagnostic studies such as laboratory tests, X-rays, electromyography (EMG), electrocardiograms (EKGs) and other tests.
  • Consults other disciplines, as necessary, to complete the patient evaluation
  • Carries out health promotion and disease prevention activities including education and shared decision-making.
  • Surgical competence in Podiatry procedures is desirable and documentation of procedures within the past 12 months will be requested reflective of the scope of privileges requested
  • Participate in VISN and national level efforts in Podiatric programs

Work Schedule: Fees include New Patient visits from 8:00am to12:00pm one to two Saturdays per month at the Temple Podiatry clinic.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Podiatrist Basic Requirements
  • Degree as a doctor of podiatric medicine, or its equivalent, from a school of podiatric medicine approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs. Approved schools are United States schools of podiatric medicine approved by the Council on Podiatry Education of the American Podiatry Association in the year in which the degree was granted. ~AND~
  • Completed, or currently completing, residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. VA Podiatrists involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status. Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the accrediting bodies for graduate medical education, the Council on Podiatric Medical Education, in the list published for the year the residency was completed, or (2) Other residencies and training experiences, or their equivalents, which the local Professional Standards Board determines to have provided an applicant with appropriate professional training. ~AND~
  • Currently hold, or will hold, a full and unrestricted license to practice Podiatry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia.

Physical Requirements:
This position may require potentially long periods of continued Moderate lifting of 15-44 pounds, Moderate carrying 15-44 pounds, Straight pulling for 1-2 hours, Pulling hand over hand for 1-2 hours, Pushing for 1-2 hours, Reaching above shoulder, Use of fingers, Both hands required, Walking for 1-2 hours, Standing for 1-2 hours, Kneeling, Repeated bending for 4-6 hours, Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other, Depth perception, Ability to distinguish basic colors, Ability to distinguish shades of colors, Hearing (aid may be permitted), Ability to work in dimmed light conditions when required, Work in front of the computer.

Education

Applicants must possess a doctor of podiatric medicine degree, or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in podiatric medicine and surgery. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed.

Approved schools are United States schools of podiatric medicine and surgery, approved by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education of the American Podiatry Medical Association in the year in which the degree was granted.
