Summary

This full-time, Title 38 position is responsible for providing Podiatry care to veterans. This includes, but is not limited to, diagnosing, treating, and managing various podiatric conditions and injuries. The successful candidate will also participate in resident and student training.

Duties:
  • Assures that a high degree of quality patient care is provided at all times.
  • Independently exercises creativity in solving problems without direct supervisory guidance to meet the varying needs of patients while under care in the Podiatry Clinic.
  • Exercises independent professional judgment in diagnosing the full range of complex Podiatric conditions as well as planning and executing the necessary treatment programs to meet complex and frequent changes in treatment objectives.
  • Refers, when indicated, patients with multiple health problems to other providers within the facility and the VISN. Consults with physicians and others, when requested, to augment the care of their patients as it relates to emergent and traumatic conditions as well as podiatric manifestations of systemic conditions.
  • Utilizes the general clinical privileges which include: ordering diagnostic tests as appropriate, writing prescriptions for medications or other items on the hospital formulary, hospitalize patients within the VISN as appropriate and discharge patients from outpatient care if it is determined that care is no longer required.
  • Travel duties to regional CBOC locations to provide podiatry care to veterans
  • Support, manage and provide preventative care to our veterans through our PAVE Program (Prevention of Amputation in Veterans Everywhere). Manage and support our remote temperature monitoring program. A program that helps to detect and alert podiatry providers when Level 3, high risk diabetic and peripheral vascular disease patients are having foot problems.
Work Schedule: Monday to Friday - 7:00 am to 3:30 pm with variances plus call duties

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Podiatrist Basic Requirements
  • Degree as a doctor of podiatric medicine, or its equivalent, from a school of podiatric medicine approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs. Approved schools are United States schools of podiatric medicine approved by the Council on Podiatry Education of the American Podiatry Association in the year in which the degree was granted. ~AND~
  • Completed, or currently completing, residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. VA Podiatrists involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status. Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the accrediting bodies for graduate medical education, the Council on Podiatric Medical Education, in the list published for the year the residency was completed, or (2) Other residencies and training experiences, or their equivalents, which the local Professional Standards Board determines to have provided an applicant with appropriate professional training. ~AND~
  • Currently hold, or will hold, a full and unrestricted license to practice Podiatry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia.
Preferred Experience: Board Certified / Board Eligible because they work with residents and students.
